WHAT WORK IS TAKING PLACE?

The term “dewatering” means pumping water from the ground at a site where there will be excavation. At Eglinton Avenue West and Avenue Road, small wells have been drilled around the entire station box where the underground mining excavation will be taking place. The dewatering system is installed in two phases, drilling of the wells and then digging shallow trenches to connect the wells and lay the pipes, pumps, and valves for the system. The volume of soil that requires dewatering is significant.

Additional dewatering wells are required to further lower the water level at the Avenue Station Main Entrance. The wells will be installed in the southbound curb lane on Avenue Road, north of Eglinton Avenue and on the westbound curb lane on Eglinton Avenue, west of Avenue Road.

TIMING

  • The installation of these additional dewatering wells will start as early as April 19, 2018.
  • Work will occur during a two (2) month period.
  • Work on Avenue Road will occur between 9:00 a.m and 11:00 p.m.
  • Work on Eglinton Avenue West will occur between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.
  • Timelines are subject to change due to weather and unforeseen circumstances.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • The work zone on Avenue Road will be removed outside permitted work hours.
  • The work zone on Eglinton Avenue West will remain in place while work is being completed.
  • Crews will be moving along the roadway and equipment is expected to change position approximately every 3-5 days.
  • Noise can be expected from the use of a pavement saw cutter, a hydrovacuum truck, and a drilling machine.

TRAFFIC AND PEDESTRIAN IMPACTS

  • Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
  • Lane reductions will be in place in the vicinity of the construction zone.
  • On-street parking spaces on the north side of Eglinton Avenue West between Avenue Road and the temporary pedestrian crosswalk will be impacted.
