Mining Update

Mining operations at the Avenue Station Secondary Entrance begin this week. Mining occurs on a 24hr schedule.

  • Mining operations are completed under the roadway and the underground operations are facilitated through the station entrance sites.
  • Crews need to connect the Secondary Entrance site to the completed TBM tunnels before they can continue mining the cavern of the future underground platform. To do this, crews will mine southward from the Secondary Entrance site.
  • The first step to mining south is to build the support arch for this section. This involves breaking through the wall of the entrance site and installing horizontal steel tubes along the top of the area to be excavated – this is called the ‘umbrella’. Building the umbrella takes approximately 3 – 4 weeks on a 24hr schedule.

Construction Activities at Avenue Road and Eglinton
