Overnight Preparatory Works for Sewer Re-lining at Laird Station

juillet 4, 2017

What Work is Taking Place

Sewer re-lining is a process intended to increase the durability of the sewers.  At Laird Drive and Eglinton Avenue East, local sewers will be re-lined in the vicinity of the construction sites.

The liner is a flexible membrane that is placed inside the sewers. Lining is designed to be generally non-disruptive and eliminates the need for excavation of the entire sewer section. The required activities take approximately three days for each sewer section.

Preparatory works will begin as early as July 4, where first a section of the sewer system will be cleaned and vacuumed then inspected using a robotic crawler with closed circuit cameras. After the preparatory works are completed, crews will then insert a liner into the sewer from within the maintenance holes. Pipes will be visible between maintenance holes to bypass pump around the sewer lines during the liner installation.

Laird Sewer Lining Work

Hours of Work
  • Preparatory works will start as early as July 4th, 2017 and will take approximately two (2) weeks to complete. Preparatory works will be completed overnight between 7:00p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
  • Crews will work at each location for approximately three (3) days.
What to Expect
  • Once preparatory works are completed, the next stage of work of sewer re-lining will begin. Due to the nature of the work, an unpleasant chemical odour may be noticeable in the vicinity of the maintenance holes and, in some circumstances, in the home. It is not harmful and this can be limited by covering floor drains while the sewers are being re-lined.
  • During the next stage of work, water interruptions may be expected. If expected, in order to reduce impacts, water interruptions will occur overnight and notice will be provided 24 hours in advance to residents directly affected by the water interruption.
Pedestrian Impacts
  • A minimum of 1.5 m will be maintained for pedestrian walkways. Existing pedestrian walkway closures at Laird Drive and Eglinton Avenue East will remain in place.
  • Temporary crosswalk closures will occur at the Eglinton Avenue East and Laird intersection, however, at least 3 crossings will be maintained.
Traffic Details
  • Lane closures will be implemented around the location of the manholes.
  • Temporary turn restrictions will be in place for works occurring at the Eglinton Avenue East and Laird Intersection.
