What we are building?

What: In this phase of construction, crews will be building the west headwalls for the future Avenue Station.  Headwalls are underground support walls located at the east and west ends of the station location. Following the site preparation, crews will be installing these underground station headwalls in advance of the arrival of the tunnel boring machines to the area.  Work on the east headwalls began in January and is still ongoing.

Avenue Station will also include a special turn-back track, requiring an elongated underground section. These turn-back tracks allow eastbound trains to move to the westbound tracks, and westbound trains to move to the eastbound tracks in case of an emergency or problems on the line. Due to the length of the turn-back track section, the eastern headwall will be farther from the intersection of Avenue Road and Eglinton Avenue (near Lascelles Boulevard).

Why: Station headwalls create the frame for future underground stations, and are required to be in place prior to the arrival of tunnel boring machines at each of the station locations along the Eglinton Crosstown route.  Construction of the headwalls requires a grout plant to be established nearby to pump a form of concrete, otherwise known as “grout”, to the station headwall location. This grout plant will be located at Highbourne Road and Eglinton Avenue West.

West Headwall Construction

When: Construction of the west headwall will begin as early as first week of March 2015. Construction is expected to continue into summer 2015.  Timelines may be rescheduled or adjusted due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

Please note the jet grout plant at Gilgorm Road will be used to supply grout for this work. The plant will remain active into summer 2015 for the duration of this work.

Where:  A new work zone will be set-up on Eglinton Avenue West in the south lanes at the intersection of Avenue Road. This will shift both eastbound and westbound traffic to the north lanes.  The work zone will be separated from the right-of-way with traffic cones and concrete barriers and/or fencing.

During the construction of west headwall, a work zone will be set-up on the south side of Eglinton Avenue West from approximately Elmsthorpe Avenue to just east of Avenue Road.
