What we are building

What: Crews will be building headwalls for the future Bathurst Station. Headwalls are underground support walls located at the east and west ends of the underground station. Following the site preparation, crews will be installing these underground station headwalls in advance of the twin tunnel construction.

Why: Station headwalls create the frame for future underground stations, and are required to be in place prior to the arrival of tunnel boring machines at each of the station locations along the Eglinton Crosstown route.  Construction of the headwalls requires a grout plant to be established nearby to pump a form of concrete, otherwise known as “grout”, to the station headwall location.  This grout plant will be located at Peveril Hill & Eglinton Avenue West.

When: A new traffic pattern for the construction of headwalls will start during the month of September 2014. Construction is expected to continue to Winter 2015. Timelines may be rescheduled or adjusted due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

Where: The work zone will extend from approximately east of Chiltern Hill Road to Old Forest Hill Road along Eglinton Avenue West. The work zone will be separated from the right-of-way with traffic cones and concrete barriers and/or fencing.  Various traffic control measures and construction zones will be near Eglinton Avenue and Bathurst intersection and shift over the coming months for the construction of two station headwalls.

Traffic Details

Peveril Hill N Closure: A work site has been set up on the north end of Peveril Hill N for the jet grout plant used for the construction of the headwalls. Peveril Hill N will be closed to and from Eglinton Avenue for the duration of headwall construction.

  • At the intersection of Eglinton Avenue and Bathurst, the east and west traffic medians on Eglinton will be removed temporarily for the construction of the headwalls.
  • Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction near the intersection of Eglinton Avenue and Bathurst Street starting from Chiltern Hill to Old Forest Hill Road.
  • Left turns are permitted at the intersection.
  • On-street parking will not be permitted within the work zones.
  • Most pedestrian walkways will remain open; however detours and sidewalk closures may be in place. Pedestrians will be separated from construction with a chain link fence.

Traffic delays are expected during construction.  Please take care when travelling near construction areas. Please watch for additional signs directing pedestrians.
