What we are building?

What: A cross passage is a tunnel cut between two other parallel tunnels required for maintenance or emergency purposes. Crews will be building one headwall for the future cross-passage required for future maintenance of the tunnels.

Why: Headwalls create the frame for future cross passages and/or stations, and are required to be in place prior to the arrival of tunnel boring machines along the Eglinton Crosstown route. Construction of the headwall requires a grout plant and grout lines to be established nearby to pump a form of concrete, otherwise known as “grout”, to the headwall location.

Where: The work zone will extend from approximately Heddington Avenue to Castleknock Road on the north side of Eglinton Avenue West. The work zone will be separated from the right-of-way with traffic cones and concrete barriers and/or fencing.  Various traffic control measures and construction zones will occupy the Eglinton Avenue near Duncannon Drive and will shift to the south side of Eglinton over the coming months for the construction of the headwall.

When: Starting in January 2015, there will be a new traffic pattern for the construction of headwall for cross passage at Duncannon Drive. At the same time, grout lines will also be installed at the edge of the road and extend from the jet grout plant at Gilgorm Road. Construction is expected to continue through to Spring 2015. Timelines may be rescheduled or adjusted due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances. Work will take place in two stages.
