Emergency Exit Building Construction Hydro Utility Pole Relocation on Petman Avenue

What work is starting?

What: Petman Avenue hydro utility pole relocation work is necessary in advance of the construction of Emergency Exit Building.  Certain hydro utility poles located on the east side of Petman Avenue and on City of Toronto property, will be relocated to a nearby location - also on City of Toronto property.

This work includes relocating underground and overhead utilities near the intersection of Eglinton Avenue East and Petman Avenue, in advance of Emergency Exit Building headwall construction.  Headwalls are required to be in place prior to the arrival of tunnel boring machines at each of the stations and the emergency exit building locations. 

Why:  Emergency exit buildings are used to evacuate passengers from tunnels in the event of an emergency at track level during operation. Emergency Exit Building station headwalls are required to be in place prior to the arrival of tunnel boring machines at each of the station locations along the Eglinton Crosstown route.  Construction of the headwalls requires the utilities to be moved safely out of the way during the installation of the headwalls.  Depending on site conditions, gas, hydro, water mains, sewers, and telephone lines, traffic lights and lighting may be relocated to allow for the installation.

When: Starting as early as mid-January 2015, crews will occupy the roadway on Petman Avenue (between Eglinton Avenue and Soudan Avenue) for several weeks in order to relocate hydro utility poles. Some work may be rescheduled or adjusted due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

Where: Hydro utility pole relocation work is required on the east side of Petman Avenue (between Eglinton Ave East and Soudan Avenue). Certain hydro utility poles located on the east side of Petman Avenue and on City of Toronto property, will be relocated to a nearby location - also on City of Toronto property.  This will require rolling lane restrictions.  

Traffic Details

This stage of work will require short-term, rolling-lane restrictions on the east side of Petman Avenue between Eglinton and Soudan.  During the day, some driveways on Petman may be temporarily blocked in order to perform the work.  Please take care when travelling near construction areas. Pedestrian walkways will remain open. Please watch for additional signs directing pedestrians. 

Transit Information 

For the safety of transit riders, both eastbound and westbound TTC bus stops in the affected area will be relocated. Watch for posted signs and future information indicating the new locations.  

Work Hours

Most of the work will be carried out between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., 7 days a week. In certain situations, some late night and/or early morning works may be required to complete the work and keep construction moving. The contractor will not always work during the extended hours, but may do so at its discretion.
