What work is taking place?
- Beginning July 1, 2019, a temporary eight week restriction on vehicles travelling between Leslie Street and Eglinton Avenue East was implemented so that Metrolinx’s constructor, Crosslinx can build the LRT guideway in the middle of Eglinton Avenue and then install railway track. An update to the original construction zone will be implemented as early as August 6, 2019. The construction zone will be expanded farther north on Leslie St. and the public vehicle turn around facility and TTC bus loop will be shifted farther north. (depicted below).
- Eglinton Avenue will remain open in both directions at all times and Leslie Street will otherwise function normally.
- Emergency services access to and from Eglinton Avenue will be maintained at all times.
- Pedestrian access between Leslie Street and Eglinton Avenue will be maintained.
- Entry to Sunnybrook Park off Leslie Street north of Eglinton Avenue is outside the work zone and will remain open.
- Access to all businesses on Leslie Street will be maintained.
- Crosstown construction on nearby major north-south routes will move out of the intersections proposed before the Leslie Street closure happens. Traffic lanes will be opened and turn restrictions lifted at Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue in May and Bayview Avenue and Eglinton Avenue in June.
Why is the closure necessary?
- Keeping the intersection open and carrying out the work would be very difficult due to the width of the road and grading issues where Leslie Street and Eglinton Avenue meet.
- Instead of six months of road closures on nights and weekends, and traffic configuration changes, the partial closure would allow the work to complete in two months.
What about the TTC?
- During the closure, the TTC’s Leslie Street 51 bus will terminate at Leslie Street north of Eglinton Avenue in a temporary bus loop. Customers can then transfer to an Eglinton bus to reach Eglinton Station.
- The 54 Lawrence East bus will use Don Mills Road instead of Leslie Street to go between Lawrence Avenue and Eglinton Avenue. Customers can transfer to 54C and 54G at Leslie Street north of Eglinton to reach Lawrence Avenue between Don Mills Road and Leslie Street during the closure. Extra time will be added to accommodate the detour via Don Mills.
TIMING
- Regular construction hours are 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., seven (7) days per week.
- The contractor may not always work during the permitted hours, but may do so at its discretion.
- Work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
- Occasional overnight work may be required. Metrolinx will notify the public in advance and monitor activities throughout.
TRAVELLING SMART DURING CONSTRUCTION
- Travel delays are expected with construction. Please allow extra time for your journey.
- Traffic will be extra heavy at peak periods during the Eglinton Crosstown LRT construction.
