Shoring and Excavation Work for Avenue Station

Spring 2016-Spring 2017

What Work is Taking Place?

Starting in mid-May, crews will be setting up the staging areas at the main and secondary entrance sites for the future Avenue Station.  Shoring is a common step in the process of installing the foundation of a building. In the first stage, crews will install steel piles, braces and tie-backs around the sides of the future entrances to support the excavation of these buildings to a depth of 32m at the main entrance and 24m at the secondary entrance. This will support the surrounding loads until the underground levels are constructed.  This stage will take approximately 12 months.

What to Expect

  • Construction staging has been designed to reduce impacts to the neighbourhood as best as possible while allowing crews to complete the work safely.
  • Future stages of the work at Avenue Station will be mined.  This will significantly reduce the potential impact to the roadway and allow crews to work under the roadway.
  • Residents near the work site can expect to hear trucks, excavators, backhoes, a pile drill and other construction equipment.
  • There will be heavy truck traffic at times entering and exiting the station entrances.
  • In addition to the construction activities, residents can expect to see material storage and equipment movement in the designated work zone.
