Stage 1: Bayview Headwall Construction

What work is starting?

What: Crews will be constructing the east headwall for the future Bayview station in advance of the twin tunnel construction. Headwalls are underground support walls located at the east and west ends of the future station location. This work will include heavy civil construction; installation of secant piles which includes the use of a large drill-rig, jet grouting, daylighting and relocating utilities.

Why: These station headwalls are required to be in place prior to the arrival of tunnel boring machines at each of the station locations along the Eglinton Crosstown route, including at the intersection of Eglinton and Bayview. 

Where: The work zone will extend from approximately west of Mann Avenue to west of Bessborough Drive along Eglinton Avenue East.  During the first stage of work, crews will occupy the south lanes on Eglinton Avenue East, east and west of Bayview Avenue, for approximately 2-3 months to construct the south side headwalls for Bayview Station.  Concrete barriers with chain link fencing will be used to separate the work zone from traffic.   

When: The first stage of Bayview headwall construction on Eglinton Avenue East, will start as early as late-October, 2015 for approximately 2-3 months.  

Some work may be rescheduled or adjusted due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

Traffic Details

Stage One – South Lanes

For the first stage of headwall construction in the south lanes, traffic will be shifted to the north side of Eglinton Avenue East.  Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction from west of Mann Avenue to just west of Bessborough Drive and continue as one-lane through, east of the emergency exit building construction near Leaside High School.  

• Eastbound Eglinton vehicles will not be permitted to turn left into Metro plaza (656 Eglinton Avenue East). 
• No access to Eglinton Avenue East from Mann Avenue
• No access to Mann Avenue from westbound Eglinton Avenue
• Vehicles travelling eastbound on Eglinton Avenue in south curb lane must exit to go southbound on Mann Avenue
• No eastbound access from Sunnybrook Plaza onto Eglinton Avenue East
• On-street parking will be restricted along the north and south of Eglinton Avenue East in this construction zone. 
• Please take care when travelling near construction areas. 

Pedestrian Walkways

During construction, the north and south Eglinton sidewalk will remain open and will be separated from the construction site by concrete barriers with chain link fence or temporary fencing. Please take care when travelling near construction areas. Please watch for additional signs directing pedestrians.

Public Transit 

Both eastbound and westbound TTC bus stops in the affected area may be relocated for the safety of transit riders. Please watch for posted signs indicating the adjusted locations.

Waste Collection

Solid Waste Management Services will continue to pick up your waste during construction of the Crosstown. Recycling and garbage collection schedules along Eglinton Avenue will not change during the construction period.  Please continue to abide by their guidelines for your garbage disposal and follow your normal routine. Please label your bins with your address and place them as close to the usual location as possible before 7 a.m. or the night before the scheduled collection day. If necessary, during construction, your bins may be temporarily moved by the contractor.

Work Hours

The hours of work as permitted by the by-law for this contract are between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., 7 days a week, when required. The contractor will not always work during the extended hours, but may do so at its discretion.

Noise and vibration associated with this construction is to be expected.
