What:  Toronto Water shut off water this morning to residents and businesses between Kane Avenue and Scott Road along Eglinton Avenue and from Eglinton Avenue south to Cameron Avenue (one block).

Why: Crews working on a passage way connecting the twin tunnels of the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) noticed water and soil leakage last evening.

As a precaution to prevent any issues such as flooding, work was stopped immediately and this incident was reported to City authorities.

Eglinton Avenue from Glenhaven Street to Keele Street has been closed and is expected to remain close through the weekend. Traffic, including TTC buses, are being diverted in this area and advance signage is being implemented to advise motorists of the closure.

There have been no injuries reported and we are currently monitoring for the potential of a sinkhole developing or flooding.  There is no damage to the tunnels themselves.

When:  Crews are on the scene working to identify the source of the problem and to stabilize and repair it. As this is emergency work, the community can expect this work to occur 24/7.

There is currently no estimate for when this work will be completed.  Information will be updated as it becomes available.

For those affected…

Currently, water has been restored to the community except for a couple of buildings along Eglinton Avenue and some residential properties along Kane Avenue. Bottled water and toilet facilities are being provided.

We are working closely with all authorities to remediate this situation as quickly and as safely as possible.
