What Work is Taking Place?

Support of excavation work, also known as shoring, has commenced to make way for the future Eglinton interchange station. This work will include pile installation, jet grouting and road deck installation. Shoring will be conducted in phases, beginning in the former TTC bus depot on the southeast corner of Yonge and Eglinton and along the south side of Eglinton Avenue between Duplex Avenue and Holly Street.

The next phase (depicted below) will take approximately 2-3 months to complete. The entire shoring process will take approximately twenty-four (24) months to complete.

Hours of Work

  • Work is expected to begin as early as May 2018. Portions of this phase of shoring will be approximately 2-3 months.
  • Work is permitted between the hours of 7:00 AM and 11:00 PM, 7 days a week.
  • The contractor may not always work during the permitted hours, but may do so at its discretion.
  • Occasional overnight work may be required. Metrolinx will notify the public in advance and monitor activities throughout.
  • Work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

What to Expect

  • A new work zone will be set up on the north side of Eglinton Avenue West at Yonge Street. Traffic will be routed around the work zone.
  • Nearby residents and businesses can expect noise in the area caused by a pile drill, crane, loaders, trucks and other construction equipment, as well as dust from drilling activity and debris removal.
  • Heavy truck traffic entering and exiting the work zone, and traveling through nearby streets can be expected.
  • In addition to construction activity, residents can expect to see equipment and material storage within designated work zones.
  • For safety purposes, fencing will be erected around the work zone.
  • All access to businesses is maintained throughout the stages.

Traffic and Pedestrian Impacts

  • Lane closures on Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue will be required to carry out the work. At least one lane in all directions will be maintained.
  • Cowbell Lane will remain closed at Eglinton Avenue East.
  • All turns at the Yonge-Eglinton intersection will be restricted, except northbound right turns onto Eglinton Avenue East.
  • The sidewalk from Duplex Avenue to Yonge Street on the south side of Eglinton Avenue West will remain closed for the duration of this stage.
  • The east-west crosswalk on the south side of the Yonge-Eglinton intersection will reopen for the duration of this stage.
  • The east-west crosswalk on the north side of the Yonge-Eglinton intersection will move approximately 20 metres north on Yonge Street.
  • The north-south crosswalk on the west side of the Yonge-Eglinton intersection will remain closed for the duration of this stage.
  • The south underground pedestrian tunnel connecting the Eglinton Subway Station to the southeast side of Eglinton Avenue and Yonge Street will remain open for this stage.
  • The east, west and north underground tunnel connecting the Eglinton Subway Station to Riocan’s Yonge-Eglinton Centre will remain closed until 2021.
