UPDATED: Utility Relocation Work near Yonge Street for Crosstown Tunelling

What we are building

What: Crews will be working on advanced utility construction and relocation prior to the  building of support headwalls and an extraction shaft, located within the Eglinton Avenue roadway on the east side of Yonge Street. 

Why: Currently, during the first stage of construction, crews are relocating utilities on the north side of Eglinton. During subsequent stages, utility relocation will continue and shift southward to the centre of, then south side of Eglinton. Construction of the headwall and shaft requires that some utilities be moved safely out of the way. Depending on site conditions, gas, hydro, water mains, sewers, traffic and street lighting, as well as telephone lines will be relocated to allow for construction.  

When: Utility relocation work in the centre lanes is expected to start as soon as early November 2014. This will be followed by a switch to the south side of Eglinton, which is expected to be complete by early 2015. Construction of the headwall and extraction shaft will commence thereafter. Timelines may be rescheduled or adjusted due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

Where and Traffic Details

Stage 2 - Centre Lanes Utility Work 

• During this stage of work, the construction zone for utility relocation will be within the middle lanes of Eglinton Avenue.  The work zone will extend from approximately west of Lillian Street to east of Cowbell Lane along Eglinton Avenue. 
• Traffic will be shifted to the north and south curb lanes and reduced to one lane in each direction.
• Left turns from westbound Eglinton traffic onto Holly Street will be prohibited.
• Left turns from northbound Holly Street onto Eglinton Avenue will be prohibited.
• Eglinton access to and from Dunfield Avenue and Cowbell Lane will remain open.

Stage 3 - South Side Utility Work 

• During stage 3, the work zone for utility relocation will switch to the south side of Eglinton Avenue. The work zone will extend from approximately west of Lillian Street to east of Yonge Street along Eglinton Avenue East.
• Traffic will be shifted to the north side of Eglinton Avenue which will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
• Northbound through traffic from Holly Street to Eglinton Avenue will NOT be allowed. Southbound traffic on Holly Street will NOT be affected.
• Left turns from westbound Eglinton traffic to Holly Street will be prohibited.
• Eastbound Eglinton curb lane traffic between Yonge Street and Holly Street must turn right and proceed southbound onto Holly Street.
• Eglinton access to and from Dunfield Avenue and Cowbell Lane will remain open.

Traffic patterns in the area will continue to change and shift during different stages of the work. All work zones will be separated from the right-of-way with traffic cones, concrete barriers and/or fencing. Traffic delays are expected during construction. Please watch the traffic signs and take care when travelling near construction areas. 

Transit Information 

For the safety of transit riders, both eastbound and westbound TTC bus stops in the affected area will be relocated. Watch for posted signs and future information indicating the new locations.  

Pedestrian Information

Pedestrian walkways will remain open; however detours may be in place. Pedestrians will be separated from construction with a chain link fence.

Work Hours

Most of the work will be carried out between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., 7 days a week. In certain situations, some late night and/or early morning works may be required to complete the work and keep construction moving. The contractor will not always work during the extended hours, but may do so at its discretion.

Noise and vibration associated with construction can be expected with this work.

Transforming transit across the middle of Toronto will involve significant road works. Construction will be visible along the corridor and on some side streets. There will be short-term local street closures and turning restrictions to allow for the construction to take place. Metrolinx, City of Toronto staff and your elected officials are working closely together to monitor and make adjustments to the local road configurations, work zones and other day to day items such as signage and temporary adjustments.
