What work is starting?
What: Crews will be performing utility relocation at the intersection of Bayview Avenue and Eglinton Avenue East prior to the headwall construction for the future Bayview Station.
Why: Headwalls are required to be in place prior to the arrival of tunnel boring machines at each of the stations. Construction of the headwalls requires the utilities to be safely relocated. Depending on site conditions, this could include moving gas, hydro, water mains, sewers, and telephone lines, traffic lights and street lighting to allow for the installation.
When and Where: Starting as early as late May, 2015 and for approximately a few weeks, crews will be working on the westbound curb lane of Eglinton Avenue East, immediately west of Bayview Avenue. Some work may be rescheduled or adjusted due to weather conditions and/or unforeseen circumstances.
Traffic Details
- During the utility relocation work on the west side of the intersection of Bayview Avenue and Eglinton Avenue East, the westbound Eglinton curb lane, immediately west of Bayview Avenue will be closed.
- The affected westbound Eglinton lane will be shifted south, around the work zone area.
- Traffic barrels or concrete barriers will be installed to separate traffic from the construction zone and in order to gradually merge traffic.
- In order to assist the traffic flow, traffic barrels will be set up on the westbound Eglinton lane, just east of Bayview Avenue.
- No driveways will be blocked during work.
Traffic patterns will continue to change and shift during different stages of work. All work zones will be separated from the right-of-way with traffic cones, jersey barriers and/or fencing. Traffic delays are expected during construction. Please watch for traffic signs and take care when travelling near construction areas.
Pedestrians
- The sidewalk on the south side of Eglinton Avenue East will remain open.
- To ensure the safety of pedestrians, the sidewalk on the north side of Eglinton Avenue East, immediately west of Bayview Avenue, will be temporarily closed. Pedestrians will be diverted to the sidewalk on the south side, using the crosswalk just east of Hoyle Avenue.
- For safety reasons, pedestrians will be separated from construction with concrete barriers and chain link fence. Please watch for additional signs directing pedestrians.
Access to stores along Eglinton Avenue East will be maintained.
Transit Information
For the safety of transit riders, both eastbound and westbound TTC bus stops in the affected area will be relocated. Watch for posted signs and future information indicating the new locations.
Work Hours
Most of the work will be carried out between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., 7 days a week. In certain situations, some late night and/or early morning works may be required to complete the work and keep construction moving. The contractor will not always work during the extended hours, but may do so at its discretion.
